DESCRIPTION:Preludes Music\, the education arm of the Bristol Ensemble\, continues its work in areas of Bristol that are experiencing high levels of economic disadvantage and aims to put music at the heart of every child’s education. By doing so we improve confidence\, co-ordination\, speech and language and benefit all other areas of their learning. \nPreludes Music has been running successfully since 2009 in several schools areas of Bristol. It is the most extensive project of its type in the country and grew from discussions between Roger Huckle of the Bristol Ensemble\, Professor Leslie Bunt of the University of the West of England and James Wetz a former Head Teacher. \nFind out more at www.bristolensemble.com/preludes

DESCRIPTION:Jacques Offenbach Orpheus in the Underworld \nLibretto by Hector Crémieux and Ludovic Halévy\nSung (mostly) in J R Planché’s London version (1865)\nNarrative script and lyrics for five additional numbers by Simon Butteriss\nTwo act version first performed 21st October 1858 at the Théâtre des Bouffes-Parisiens \nMichael Waldron conductor\nSimon Butteriss director\nElliott Squire associate designer\nLuca Panetta lighting designer\nBristol Ensemble \nSung in English with surtitles \nOffenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld scandalized and delighted 19th century Paris – no one was safe and nothing was sacred as Offenbach cut a gleeful swathe through political\, musical and moral peccadilloes with a dazzlingly tuneful score that embraced both the Can-Can and the Marseillaise. Offenbach\, dubbed by Rossini the Mozart of the Champs Elysées\, pokes hilarious fun at po-faced classical opera in general and Gluck in particular as Orpheus is dragged to Hell to rescue an unwilling wife\, accompanied by the Gods\, in search of Bacchanalian joy. \n“National treasure” (BBC Music Magazine) Simon Butteriss adapts and directs what promises to be an outrageously joyous version of Offenbach’s comic masterpiece. \n4.30pm Gardens & restaurant open\n7pm Performance starts\n9pm Approximate end \nRunning time: two hours with half-hour interval \nTickets £30 to £120\, available online at www.ifopera.com/orpheus-in-the-underworld and from Bath Box Office on 01225 463362.
