SUMMARY:Forgotten Songs and Stories
DESCRIPTION:A celebration of community\, heritage\, songs and stories featuring singers\, storytellers\, poets and musicians with members of the Bristol Ensemble Strings and Jazz Quintet. Composed and created by double bassist Daphna Sadeh-Neu this is a unique collaboration that originated with Global Majority women in Bristol and will be a debut performance at the Bristol Beacon. \n \nForgotten Songs & Stories is an original new work formed from workshops with an inspiring group of 15 South Asian\, East Asian\, African\, Middle Eastern\, South American\, Jewish\, Irish and Refugee women. The compositions\, poetry and songs share an intimate celebration of their stories\, with a central thread connecting generational memory\, resilience and community. Rich and deeply honest\, the concert chronicles tales of migration to new homes and belonging\, from tradition and ceremony to love and marriage\, from darkness and trauma to moments of hope and joy. \nThe show’s collective of artists encompasses a wealth of talent spanning the worlds of jazz\, classical and Middle Eastern music. The narrative is interwoven with storytelling\, vocals and a 7-piece string ensemble alongside double bass\, saxophone\, percussion\, piano and oud. The stories are testament to how the remarkable power of creativity can bring women’s personal histories to life for wider audiences: connecting people through memory and empowering unity. \nTickets £10.90 (£5.45 for under 18s and unwaged)\, including booking fee\, available from Bristol Beacon box office online and by phone on 0117 203 4040. \nPresented by Daphna Sadeh-Neu\nWith thanks to Arts Council England for their generous support of this project

SUMMARY:Slapstick Festival - Silent Comedy Gala
DESCRIPTION:Book now\nDownton Abbey\, The Gold and Paddington star Hugh Bonneville introduces a triple bill of laugh-out-loud silent comedy classics\, back in the auditorium where Slapstick began and with each showing on a giant screen with live musical accompaniment. \nTopping the film bill at the Slapstick’s 20th gala will be the double Oscar-nominated THE GOLD RUSH (1925)\, written and directed by and starring Charlie Chaplin as a lone Klondike prospector who discovers it is easier to find trouble than gold\, and featuring a real bear and dancing bread rolls. \nJoining it in the line-up will be the 1922 short COPS which finds an impressively acrobatic Buster Keaton being chased by a city’s entire police force\, and BIG BUSINESS (1929)\, starring Laurel & Hardy as hilariously incompetent Christmas tree salesmen. \nProviding the live musical accompaniment for The Gold Rush will be the 16-piece Bristol Ensemble\, conducted by Günter A. Buchwald\, with pianist John Sweeney accompanying COPS and Günter and Frank Bockius playing for Big Business. \nThere will also be pre-interval entertainment from Cheryl Knight\, giving excerpts from her Joyce Grenfell tribute show which proved such a hit at Slapstick 2023 and\, in the foyer before curtain-up\, the Bristol-based Shanghai Shuffle jazz band performing tunes from the silent film era. \nFoyer entertainment from 6pm from Shanghai Shuffle.

SUMMARY:The Hunchback of Notre Dame - film and live orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Book now\nCome and experience this epic story and production with the Bristol Ensemble – A Flicker Alley restoration with live orchestra celebrating 100 years since it was first released in September 1923. \nHunchback is a huge production: the sets depicting 15th-century Paris covered nineteen acres of Universal Pictures’ back lot and included the façade of Notre Dame Cathedral. Filming took six months and the climactic sequence employed two thousand extras\, but it’s Lon Chaney’s performance that makes the character unforgettable. \nThe Hunchback of Notre Dame premiered at New York’s Astor Theatre on September 2\,1923.The success of the film was immediate; it made Carl Laemmle and Universal Pictures a fortune\, and turned Lon Chaney into a screen legend. This edition is restored and mastered by Flicker Alley from a multi-tinted 16mm print struck in 1926 from the original camera negative. Screened with a symphonic score by Robert Israel.

SUMMARY:*Sold out* Mishima by Philip Glass - Bristol Ensemble Contemporary
DESCRIPTION:Spectra Anna Thorvaldsdottir\nStringsongs Meredith Monk\nReflections Anna Thorvaldsdottir\nString Quartet No.3 ‘Mishima’ Philip Glass\n\nAn hour of contemporary music for string quartet\, exploring timescales in human memory and the natural environment.\n\nString Quartet No.3 by Philip Glass forms the core of the programme\, with the mesmerising cross rhythms and hypnotic quality for which the composer is so well known. Based on music Glass wrote for a film based on the life of Japanese author Yukio Mishima\, this short quartet references moments in the writer’s life.\n\nIcelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir’s work is deeply inspired by the elemental landscapes of her native country. Her work for strings explores primordial textures\, combining emotional intensity with glacial stasis. \nA pioneer of interdisciplinary art\, for over five decades\, Meredith Monk has worked across composition\, performance\, choreography and direction. She has developed a unique style which links the archaic with the experimental. Stringsongs was written for the Kronos Quartet in 2005\, and has been described by critic Tom Service as having a ‘mysterious mythic power’. \nTickets £15 full price\, £8 concessions for all who need it\, available online at www.arnolfini.org.uk/whatson/mishima

SUMMARY:Stroud Choral: The Haydn Brothers
DESCRIPTION:Book now\nStroud Choral Society\nBristol Ensemble\nSimon Bell conductor \nMichael Haydn Requiem in C\nJoseph Haydn Nelson Mass \nStroud Choral Society led by their Musical Director Simon Bell will perform two works by the Haydn brothers – firstly\, the beautiful Requiem in C by the lesser known Michael Haydn (1737 – 1806) whose Requiem greatly influenced Mozart. \nThe second part of the concert features the well known Nelson Mass\, or as originally entitled\,  the Missa in Angustiis\, (Mass for troubled times) by Joseph Haydn. This piece is argued to be his finest work and is the culmination of his late work of liturgical music. Written at the time of stunning military success by Napoleon against Haydn’s Austria\, it was performed as news broke of Nelson’s victory at The Battle of the Nile and thus acquired its enduring name. \nTickets are available from www.ticketsource.co.uk

SUMMARY:Exultate Singers: St John Passion
DESCRIPTION:Book now\nExultate Singers\nBristol Ensemble Baroque\nPeter Davoren Evangelist / tenor\nFrederick Long Christus / bass\nKeri Fuge soprano\nMartha McLorinan alto\nConducted by David Ogden \nFirst performed on Good Friday 1724\, Bach’s St John Passion is a dramatic account of Christ’s final days\, from the betrayal of Judas to the preparation for laying the body in the tomb.  \nExultate Singers is joined by an outstanding line up of soloists\, together with a specialist baroque orchestra from the Bristol Ensemble for this performance. The concert will be sung in German and takes place within a few days of the work’s 300th anniversary\, connecting us across the centuries to all the listeners who have experienced the power and immediacy of this remarkable music in a live performance. \nBach’s first great sacred masterpiece brings to life the humanity of the drama. The choir takes on the role of the people\, reflecting on the progression of the Easter story. The narrative is sung by the tenor Evangelist\, exquistely beautiful arias provide moments of contemplation\, and the entire work is bound together by chorales\, German hymns enhanced by Bach’s harmonic invention. The work culminates in the intense and loving chorus Ruht wohl. This is ultimately an optimistic piece\, the most personal and meditative of Bach’s Passion settings.  \nTickets are £16 to £28 with discounts for students in full time education and under 18s. Book online at www.exultatesingers.org/product/bach-st-john-passion/ or www.stgeorgesbristol.co.uk\, telephone 0117 929 4929 or buy over the counter at St George’s Bristol.

Its six movements are based on dumka – Ukrainian folk songs – characterised by their abrupt changes from doleful laments to exuberant outbursts.
