Bach’s St Matthew Passion. \nComposed in 1727 for Good Friday at St Thomas’s Church in Leipzig\, the St Matthew Passion stands as one of the crowning achievements of Western music. It tells the story of Christ’s final days – his betrayal\, trial\, crucifixion\, and burial – in music of drama\, devotion and beauty that continues to resonate nearly three centuries later. \nBach’s music moves seamlessly between vivid storytelling and moments of deep reflection. The Evangelist narrates the unfolding events in expressive recitative\, and heartfelt arias\, chorales and monumental choruses invite the listener to contemplate universal themes of suffering\, compassion and redemption. \nThe tenor soloist and Evangelist is the “superbly artistic” Peter Davoren\, who sings with illustrious groups including the BBC Singers\, Monteverdi Choir\, Tenebrae\, the Sixteen and Solomon’s Knot. Bass Frederick Long\, a distinguished concert and opera singer known for his performances with acclaimed vocal ensemble I Fagiolini\, brings expressive warmth and dignity to the role of Christus. They are joined by Bristol Ensemble Baroque performing on authentic period instruments\, bringing clarity\, colour and immediacy to Bach’s glorious score. \nThe magnificent acoustic of St George’s Bristol provides the perfect setting for this immersive and powerful musical experience. Whether you are encountering the work for the first time or returning to it as a cherished masterpiece\, this promises to be an unforgettable evening of spiritual and emotional intensity\, performed in the original German. \nTickets \nFront 5 rows of central stalls and central gallery £30\nMid and rear central stalls £27\nSide stalls and first row of side gallery £27\nSecond row of side gallery £22\nThird row of side gallery £18 \nHow to book  \nBook with Exultate Singers box office (no booking fee) \nBook with St George’s box office – the venue’s 9% booking fee applies \n\nBuy online at www.stgeorgesbristol.co.uk\nTelephone 0117 929 4929 (open Wednesday\, Thursday and Friday\, 11am to 3pm)\nBook in person at St George’s Bristol (open Wednesday\, Thursday and Friday\, 11am to 3pm\, and in person 90 minutes before the start of an event)

SUMMARY:Beethoven 6
DESCRIPTION:Bristol Ensemble\nChiara Braggion soprano\nJames Duddle conductor \nBeethoven Symphony No. 6 ‘Pastoral’\nVivaldi Spring from The Four Seasons\nMendelssohn Hebrides Overture\nMozart Exultate Jubilate \n\nComposed between 1802 and 1808\, Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony\, the “Pastoral\,” is one of his most vivid and personal works. Lasting approximately 40 minutes\, it is one of only two symphonies he named himself\, titled “Pastoral Symphony\, or Recollections of Country Life.”  \n\n\nThrough five connected movements\, Beethoven depicts scenes from rural life: peaceful landscapes\, birdsong by a brook\, a lively country dance\, a dramatic thunderstorm\, and a final song of gratitude. \n\nScene 1: Awakening of cheerful feelings on arrival in the countryside \n\n\nScene 2: Scene by the brook \n\n\nScene 3: Merry gathering of country folk \n\n\nScene 4: Thunder\, Storm \n\n\nScene 5: Shepherd’s song. Cheerful and thankful feelings after the storm \n\n\n\nBeethoven wrote about his Pastoral Symphony: \n\n\n“Here\, … lying by the brook with nut-trees\, listening to the birds singing\, I wrote the ‘Scene by the Brook’ and the goldhammers there up above me\, the quails and cuckoos round about me\, helped compose.” \n\n\nIn the second movement\, the flute\, oboe\, and clarinet imitate the nightingale\, quail\, and cuckoo\, while in the third movement Beethoven famously instructs the orchestra to play one passage “as fast as you can.” The final three movements follow one another without pause\, forming a continuous dramatic arc from celebration\, through storm\, to gratitude. \n\n\nRich in atmosphere and storytelling\, the “Pastoral” Symphony remains one of Beethoven’s most beloved works\, capturing both the beauty and power of nature in sound. \n\n\nThe programme also features Vivaldi’s Spring from The Four Seasons\, Mendelssohn’s evocative Hebrides Overture\, and Mozart’s radiant Exultate Jubilate\, brought to life by Soprano Chiara Braggion.

SUMMARY:Henleaze Concert Society: From Grace to Grandeur
DESCRIPTION:Mozart Divertimento in D\nStamitz Concerto for Flute\, Oboe and Strings in G major\nSchubert Octet \nThis refined and radiant programme brings together three masters of the Classical and early Romantic eras\, offering a journey from sparkling elegance to expansive lyricism. \nMozart’s Divertimento in D opens the concert with charm and vitality. Written for strings\, this bright and buoyant work captures the composer’s signature wit and grace. Originally intended as light entertainment\, it’s filled with poised melodies\, graceful dance movements\, and the effortless brilliance of Mozart at his most genial. \nWe continue with Carl Stamitz’s Concerto for Flute\, Oboe\, and Strings in G major—a graceful and spirited dialogue between two soloists. As a leading figure of the Mannheim School\, Stamitz brings clarity\, elegance\, and a touch of operatic flair to this delightful concerto\, blending Classical poise with expressive nuance. \nThe programme concludes with Schubert’s magnificent Octet\, a monumental work for eight players that bridges the intimacy of chamber music with symphonic ambition. Rich in melody and emotional range\, it flows through moments of lyrical beauty\, lively rustic dances\, and deep reflection—an expansive and deeply human musical conversation. \nPre-concert talk with Steve Clarke begins at 6.45pm. Doors open at 6.15pm for the talk and at 7.15pm for the concert only. SUMMARY:Bath Choral Society: Dido and Aeneas
DESCRIPTION:Purcell Dido and Aeneas\nHandel Dixit Dominus \nBath Choral Society\nBristol Ensemble\nStephanie Bodsworth and Rebecca Bottone sopranos\nOlivia Ray alto\nEamonn Mulhall tenor\nPhilip Smith bass\nKatrine Reimers conductor \nWas ever a tragic love story more poignantly told? \nDido and Aeneas\, the seventeenth-century gem depicting the abandonment of the Queen of Carthage\, is a serious contender for the greatest English opera of all time. Purcell’s take on the story from Virgil’s Aeneid involves the chorus at every stage of the action. Underpinned with a powerful immediacy and simplicity\, it has long had a broad appeal. The work’s emotional climax\, “When I am laid in earth”\, is as devastating as it is exquisite. \nThis concert performance is paired with another great masterpiece from the Baroque – Handel’s Dixit Dominus. Handel\, ever a master of drama\, brings to this choral Psalm setting a range of colours so broad that it might even take fans of his Messiah by surprise.

DESCRIPTION:Bristol Ensemble\nLeon Bosch director/double bass \nBritten Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge\nBarber Adagio for Strings\nWoodborne Red Ink\nElgar Introduction and Allegro \nLeon Bosch has built an international career as a performer and conductor and is one of the few double bass players to conduct chamber and symphonic ensembles directly from the instrument.
