SUMMARY:If Opera: Die Fledermaus
DESCRIPTION:Johann Strauss II Die Fledermaus\nLibretto by Richard Genée and Karl Haffner \nConductor Thomas Blunt\nDirector/Narrator Simon Butteriss \nWith the Bristol Ensemble and If Opera chorus\nOrchestral reduction supplied by Pocket Publications \nSung in English with surtitles \nFirst performed 5th April 1874 at the Theater an der Wien\, Vienna \nA farcical story fizzing with disguises… \nIn the repertoire of opera houses throughout Europe\, certain operettas have lost none of their sparkle. Chief among them is Johann Strauss’s effervescent Die Fledermaus\, with its seemingly endless parade of gorgeous melodies and stirring waltzes. The opera is a whirlwind of romantic ruses\, false identities\, practical jokes\, infidelities\, confusions and Champagne. \nThis is a Fledermaus with a difference. In this specially staged and costumed performance\, comic genius Simon Butteriss replaces the operetta’s original spoken dialogue with a racy and pacy narration that follows every twist and turn of this ludicrous tale. Witty\, clever and with knowing nods to the present day\, it is delivered with Butteriss’ customary flamboyance and panache. This unique presentation is “in short\, the perfect blend of Viennese Schlagobers and English salt” (The Times) and not to be missed! \nTickets\n£20.00 – £95.00 Members\n£20.00 – £100.00 Non-members \nTickets on sale now at Bath Box Office online or by phone on 01225 463 362 \nChildren aged 7+ are welcome & under 18’s go free (limited availability\, please enquire at Bath Box Office) \nNo dogs are permitted\, except for assistance dogs

SUMMARY:If Opera: Lucia di Lammermoor
DESCRIPTION:Gaetano Donizetti Lucia di Lammermoor \nDirector Thomas Guthrie\nConductor Oliver Gooch\nDesigner Ruth Paton \nWith the Bristol Ensemble and If Opera chorus\nOrchestral reduction supplied by Pocket Publications \nSung in Italian with English surtitles \nLibretto by Salvadore Cammarano\, based on Sir Walter Scott’s novel The Bride of Lammermoor\nFirst performed 26th September 1835 at Teatro di San Carlo\, Naples \nMadly in love… \nOne of the most revered of 19th century operas\, Lucia di Lammermoor follows the fortunes of Lucia (Lucy Ashton) sister of the Lord of Lammermoor\, and the enmity they have for the Ravenswood family. Lucia is in love with Edgardo of the Ravenswoods\, but her brother Enrico\, has other plans for her matrimony. \nThe opera is a gothic thriller\, complete with ghostly apparitions\, duels and acts of revenge. But it has become most famous for the elongated\, so-called ‘mad scene’ in which Lucia\, having murdered her imposed husband Arturo\, embarks on one of the most challenging and thrilling arias in the entire repertoire\, ‘Il dolce suono’. \nTo project the power of this opera and Donizetti’s beautiful music to full advantage\, we have reconfigured the seating so that the audience surrounds the stage and the opera is directed as an ‘in the round’ performance. This creates real proximity with the performance and an immersive experience for this most thrilling of dramas\, particularly for the front row seats surrounding the stage. \nWith a stellar cast directed by Thomas Guthrie\, an innovative and award-winning British director\, and conducted by Oliver Gooch\, Lucia di Lammermoor is the magnificent centrepiece of the If Opera 2024 season. \nTickets\n£20.00 – £115.00 Members\n£20.00 – £120.00 Non-members \nTickets on sale now at Bath Box Office online or by phone on 01225 463 362 \nChildren aged 12+ are welcome & under 18s go free (limited availability\, please enquire at Bath Box Office) \nNo dogs are permitted\, except for assistance dogs

SUMMARY:Fauré's Requiem and Ravel's Bolero
DESCRIPTION:Fauré Requiem\nRavel Bolero \nBristol Ensemble\nFitzhardinge Consort \nJoin Bristol Ensemble and Fitzhardinge Consort on a grand tour of France\, taking in two of the timeless pinnacles of French classical music\, both shiningly original\, deeply dramatic and powerfully moving in their own distinct way. \nFauré’s Requiem holds some of the most beautiful and recognisable melodies the composer ever wrote. Far from the sombre tone of many requiems it seems to evoke a serene\, very human sense of wonder grounded in a vast\, celestial universe. \nRavel’s Bolero\, by contrast – built from a single theme that came to the composer before a dip in the sea – has an irresistible rhythmic drive that builds into a breathtaking\, thrilling crescendo – made famous by Torvill and Dean’s legendary ice skating routine at the 1984 winter Olympics. This will be an epic performance for orchestra and choir\, approximately one hour in length (7-8pm\, or 9-10pm). Vive la musique! \nTickets £10.90\, £23.98\, £27.25 and £30.52 including St George’s Bristol booking fees\, available from St George’s box office online\, by phone on 0117 929 4929\, and over the counter at St George’s. \n

SUMMARY:Lunchtime Chamber Concert: Schubert String Quintet in C
DESCRIPTION:The Somerset International Festival of the Arts’ lunchtime concert features one of the greatest of all chamber music works – Schubert’s Quintet in C\, with international performers in the intimate surroundings of St Andrew’s Church. \nSchubert’s final chamber work is widely considered one of the great achievements in Western Culture.  The sublime slow movement is a true masterpiece\, and is often described as the epitome of coming to terms with the end of life.  It holds a unique place in the history of music\, with the famous novelist Thomas Mann asked for it to be played on his deathbed\, as did pianist Arthur Rubinstein\, and the composer Benjamin Britten considered “Schubert’s final year as the most miraculous year in the history of music.”

SUMMARY:Steve Reich - Different Trains
DESCRIPTION:Bristol Ensemble performs an intriguing programme of contemporary works in the unique setting of Bristol 1904 Arts Club. \nSteve Reich’s earlier work had frequently used tape\, looped and played back at different speeds. However\, Different Trains was a novel experiment\, using recorded speech as a source for melodies. \nThe recorded speech that forms the basis for Different Trains is taken from interviews with people in the United States and Europe about the years leading up to\, during\, and immediately after World War II. \nWe also feature three leading UK female composers – Hannah Kendall\, Anna Meredith and Carmen Ho – all with distinctive styles and unique voices. \nProgramme: \nHannah Kendall – Vera \nAnna Meredith – Honeyed Words \nCarmen Ho – The Way I See\nSteve Reich – Different Trains \nTickets £20\, available online from Eventbrite. Seating is unreserved. \nWe are grateful to the Vaughan Williams Foundation and Francis Routh Trust for their support. \n        \n

SUMMARY:Haydn's The Creation
DESCRIPTION:This autumn\, the Fitzhardinge Consort and Bristol Ensemble join forces to bring you Haydn’s epic masterpiece – The Creation. \n‘The Creation’\, written by Joseph Haydn between 1797 and 1798\, celebrates the creation of the world as narrated in the Book of Genesis. The choir has an ambitious programme of charity\, education and outreach work in the pipeline\, designed to bring music to those that need it most but hear it least. \nThe choir sings regularly across the region to great critical acclaim\, and has become known for its exciting and original interpretations of Renaissance and Baroque music\, as well as new works of living composers. Fitzhardinge is committed to encouraging young musicians\, and a handful of university students are mentored by the more experienced members of the group. \nBar \nA bar will be available throughout the event. Alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks will be available. Card only. \nChildren \nChildren must be accompanied by an adult. Please ensure there is a ratio of no more than four children to one adult. Children’s ear defenders are available to borrow on a first come first served basis. \nThis is a fundraising event for Bristol Cathedral. Charity number 1204673
