SUMMARY:Preludes Music
DESCRIPTION:Preludes Music\, the education arm of the Bristol Ensemble\, continues its work in areas of Bristol that are experiencing high levels of economic disadvantage and aims to put music at the heart of every child’s education. It is the most extensive project of its type in the country and grew from discussions between Roger Huckle of the Bristol Ensemble\, Professor Leslie Bunt of the University of the West of England and James Wetz a former Head Teacher. \nFind out more at www.bristolensemble.com/preludes

SUMMARY:Beethoven 6
DESCRIPTION:Bristol Ensemble\nChiara Braggion soprano\nJames Duddle conductor \nBeethoven Symphony No. 6 ‘Pastoral’\nVivaldi Spring from The Four Seasons\nMendelssohn Hebrides Overture\nMozart Exultate Jubilate \n\nComposed between 1802 and 1808\, Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony\, the “Pastoral\,” is one of his most vivid and personal works. Lasting approximately 40 minutes\, it is one of only two symphonies he named himself\, titled “Pastoral Symphony\, or Recollections of Country Life.”  \n\n\nThrough five connected movements\, Beethoven depicts scenes from rural life: peaceful landscapes\, birdsong by a brook\, a lively country dance\, a dramatic thunderstorm\, and a final song of gratitude. \n\nScene 1: Awakening of cheerful feelings on arrival in the countryside \n\n\nScene 2: Scene by the brook \n\n\nScene 3: Merry gathering of country folk \n\n\nScene 4: Thunder\, Storm \n\n\nScene 5: Shepherd’s song. Cheerful and thankful feelings after the storm \n\n\n\nBeethoven wrote about his Pastoral Symphony: \n\n\n“Here\, … lying by the brook with nut-trees\, listening to the birds singing\, I wrote the ‘Scene by the Brook’ and the goldhammers there up above me\, the quails and cuckoos round about me\, helped compose.” \n\n\nIn the second movement\, the flute\, oboe\, and clarinet imitate the nightingale\, quail\, and cuckoo\, while in the third movement Beethoven famously instructs the orchestra to play one passage “as fast as you can.” The final three movements follow one another without pause\, forming a continuous dramatic arc from celebration\, through storm\, to gratitude. \n\n\nRich in atmosphere and storytelling\, the “Pastoral” Symphony remains one of Beethoven’s most beloved works\, capturing both the beauty and power of nature in sound. \n\n\nThe programme also features Vivaldi’s Spring from The Four Seasons\, Mendelssohn’s evocative Hebrides Overture\, and Mozart’s radiant Exultate Jubilate\, brought to life by Soprano Chiara Braggion.

SUMMARY:Bristol Bach Choir: Mass in B Minor
DESCRIPTION:Bristol Bach Choir\nBristol Ensemble Baroque\nDaisy Walford soprano\nAngharad Rowlands alto\nKieran White tenor\nEdmund Danon bass\nDavid Bednall conductor \nDescribed by Parry as ‘the mightiest choral work ever written’\, the Mass in B minor by J S Bach is unquestionably one of the keystones of the repertoire. Bristol Bach Choir will present a performance of this eternally fresh masterpiece with the Bristol Ensemble on Baroque instruments. \nThe acoustics of St George’s will be the ideal place in which to hear this work with its wide-ranging textures of arias\, ensembles and choruses and to wonder again at Bach’s seemingly bottomless source of inspiration.
