SUMMARY:From Darkness to Light: Britten\, Strauss\, and Vaughan Williams
DESCRIPTION:Britten Les Illuminations\nVaughan Williams Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis\nStrauss Metamorphosen \nElizabeth Watts director/soprano\nBristol Ensemble \nThe internationally-acclaimed soprano\, Elizabeth Watts\, directs the Bristol Ensemble in this powerful exploration of human suffering and transcendence. \nBritten’s Les Illuminations\, based on nine poems by Arthur Rimbaud\, forms the centrepiece of the concert\, performed here in the version for soprano. Vaughan Williams’ iconic Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis\, scored for string quartet and two string orchestras\, is one of the best loved works of English string music. \nRichard Strauss’s powerful and evocative elegy for 23 solo strings\, Metamorphosen\, ends this program of music exploring darkness\, light\, and human suffering. Composed just after the second world war\, in response to the bombing of German cultural and artistic centres\, its poignant closing bars reference the funeral March from Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony in a defiant gesture signifying the power of art over warfare.

DESCRIPTION:Frédéric Chopin Piano Concerto No.2 Op.21\nDmitri Shostakovich Gadfly Suite \nViv McLean piano \nOur season opens with the lyrical beauty of Frédéric Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2\, composed in 1829 when he was just 20 years old. Premiered in Warsaw to a sold-out audience with Chopin himself at the keyboard\, this concerto showcases the composer’s gift for haunting melodies and brilliant pianism. The central Adagio\, tender and romantic\, was inspired by his youthful infatuation with soprano Konstancja Gładkowska. \nDmitri Shostakovich’s Gadfly Suite brings cinematic drama to the concert hall. Composed for the 1955 Soviet film The Gadfly\, it follows the tale of a 19th-century Austrian revolutionary. DESCRIPTION:300 local children from Bristol Ensemble’s award-winning music education programme take to the stage to perform in their annual Preludes Music concert. \nThe children will be supported by the Preludes Music band and Bristol Ensemble players\, delivering a wonderful learning experience for the children\, and a fantastic concert for audience members. \nPreludes Music is an education programme run by the Bristol Ensemble. Preludes has been working with children in under-resourced local communities for 15 years – delivering music education and life-enriching cultural experiences to children who have few opportunities to access music and the arts. This year\, the programme will reach around 4\,500 children.
