SUMMARY:Terry Riley - In C
DESCRIPTION:Programme \nPeter McGarr – Vanishing Games\nRuth Gipps – The Piper of dreams – Solo Oboe \nAnna Meredith – Blackfriars  \nBristol Ensemble performs an intriguing programme of contemporary works in the unique setting of Bristol 1904 Arts Club. \nIn C is a musical piece composed by Terry Riley in 1964 for an indefinite number of performers. A series of short melodic fragments that can be repeated at the discretion of musicians\, In C is often cited as the first minimalist composition to make a significant impact on the public consciousness. \nA photo of a young couple sitting on a beach in 1937 was the inspiration for Peter McGarr’s Vanishing Games. The music travels through their imagined life: childhood games\, love songs\, landscapes and lullabies\, always returning the original snapshot\, with the words written on the back – ‘Monica and I at Kimnel Bay\, 1937.’ \nThe programme also includes works by Ruth Gipps for solo oboe\, and Anna Meredith’s Blackfriars for string quartet. \nTickets £20 available from Eventbrite\, with a free glass of mulled wine and mince pies included. \nWe are grateful to the Vaughan Williams Foundation and Francis Routh Foundation for their support. \n     \n

SUMMARY:Philip Glass - Company
DESCRIPTION:John Pickard String Quartet No. 2\nSadie Harrison Aurea Luce\nCarmen Ho The Way It Is\nCarmen Ho Unknown (piano solo)\nThomas Ades O Albion\nPhilip Glass Company\nJohn Cage 4’33” \nBristol Ensemble performs an intriguing programme of contemporary works in the unique setting of Bristol 1904 Arts Club. \nPhilip Glass’ String Quartet No.2 ‘ Company’ was commissioned by the Mabou Mines Foundation for the dramatisation of Samuel Beckett’s prose poem Company. \nJohn Pickard’s String Quartet No.2 was first performed by the Allegri Quartet in the extraordinary Italianate village of Portmeirion in North Wales. It is a warm and lyrical work\, which starts quietly and builds momentum\, culminating in an energetic and optimistic conclusion. \n4′33″ premiered in 1952 and was met with shock and widespread controversy; many musicologists revisited the very definition of music and questioned whether Cage’s work qualified as such. In fact\, Cage intended 4′33″ to be experimental — to test the audience’s attitude to silence and prove that any auditory experience may constitute music\, seeing that absolute silence cannot exist. \nWorks by Sadie Harrison\, Carmen Ho and Thomas Ades complete the programme. \nTickets £20\, available from Eventbrite. \nWe are grateful to the Vaughan Williams Foundation and Francis Routh Foundation for their support. \n  \n       \n

SUMMARY:Steve Reich - Different Trains
DESCRIPTION:Bristol Ensemble performs an intriguing programme of contemporary works in the unique setting of Bristol 1904 Arts Club. \nSteve Reich’s earlier work had frequently used tape\, looped and played back at different speeds. However\, Different Trains was a novel experiment\, using recorded speech as a source for melodies. \nThe recorded speech that forms the basis for Different Trains is taken from interviews with people in the United States and Europe about the years leading up to\, during\, and immediately after World War II. \nWe also feature three leading UK female composers – Hannah Kendall\, Anna Meredith and Carmen Ho – all with distinctive styles and unique voices. \nProgramme: \nHannah Kendall – Vera \nAnna Meredith – Honeyed Words \nCarmen Ho – The Way I See\nSteve Reich – Different Trains \nTickets £20\, available online from Eventbrite. Seating is unreserved. \nWe are grateful to the Vaughan Williams Foundation and Francis Routh Trust for their support. \n        \n

SUMMARY:Gavin Bryars Double Bill: Sinking of the Titanic and Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet
DESCRIPTION:Bristol Ensemble performs The Sinking of the Titanic by British minimalist composer Gavin Bryars. The work was inspired by the story that the band on the RMS Titanic continued to perform as the ship sank in 1912 and imagines how the music performed by the band would reverberate through the water some time after they ceased performing. Composed between 1969 and 1972\, the work is now considered one of the classics of British classical experimental music. \nIt was first recorded in 1975 when it became the first release on Brian Eno’s Obscure Records. The programme includes Bryars’ arrangement of the religious song Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet which he heard in London in 1971 whilst working on a film about people living rough in the area around Elephant and Castle and Waterloo Station. In the course of being filmed\, some people broke into drunken song – sometimes bits of opera\, sometimes sentimental ballads – and one\, who in fact did not drink\, sang the song Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet. \nThe programme includes the world premiere of Marcus Davidson’s Felefantasi\, a work inspired by the Norwegian Fele\, the way it’s played (technique wise) and the music written for it. \nTickets £20 for adults\, £15 for students in full time education and under 25 year olds are available online.
