SUMMARY:Tea-Time Concert
DESCRIPTION:Henry Mancini The Pink Panther\, Moon River\, The Impossible Dream\nAntonín Dvořák Piano Trio No.4 in E minor ‘Dumky’ Op.90 \nRoger Huckle violin\nHarriet Wiltshire cello\nPaul Israel piano \nThis recital brings together music from some very different sound worlds\, marking the 100th anniversary of the birth of the American composer Henry Mancini  with performances of some of his most iconic music including The Pink Panther\, and Dvořák’s Piano Trio. \nWritten in 1890-91\, Dvořák’s groundbreaking piano trio is rooted in Slavic folk music. Its six movements are based on dumka – Ukrainian folk songs – characterised by their abrupt changes from doleful laments to exuberant outbursts. Dvorák’s intention in incorporating this particular type of folk music was to create a work that spoke deeply to people and since its first performance in Prague on 11 April 1891\, the trio has been among the most successful of his chamber works. \nTea and home made cakes served at 4pm. \nTickets £15 (£13 for those on low incomes)\, available online from Eventbrite or on the door. Under 18s free of charge.

SUMMARY:Tea-Time Concert
DESCRIPTION:Rossini Overture to The Barber of Seville\nPonchielli Dance of the Hours\nDebussy Petite Suite \nThe woodwind have their chance to shine in this programme of colourful music from around Europe with Rossini’s effervescent Overture to the Barber of Seville as the perfect opener. \nThe Italian theme is continued with Dance of the Hours\, a ballet from Amilcare Ponchielli’s opera La Gioconda\, made famous by its inclusion in Disney’s 1940 film Fantasia with dancing and duelling hippos and alligators taking centre stage. \nDebussy’s dance-like Petite Suite beautifully translates from the original piano duet to scoring for wind quintet. The first two movements are based on poems by the 19th century poet Paul Verlaine\, from his 1869 collection Fêtes galantes. The poems evoke the era of 18th-century aristocrats on country outings\, romantic trysts and languid evenings. \nTea and home made cakes served at 4pm. \nTickets £15 (£13 for those on low incomes)\, available online from Eventbrite on the door. Under 18s free of charge.

SUMMARY:Tea-Time Concert: String Serenade
DESCRIPTION:Schubert String Trio in B flat D 471\nPhillip Glass String Quartet No. 2 ‘Company’\nMozart String Quintet in G minor K.516 \nThis programme of music for 3\, 4 and 5 players is a fascinating exploration of the versatility and inventiveness of chamber string ensemble repertoire. Schubert’s Trio was an unfinished work\, set aside by the composer at the age of 19 partway through the second movement and never completed. Schubert’s generosity of theme and melody contrasts with the minimalism of Philip Glass’s String Quartet. Mozart adds a second viola to the quartet for his rich and melancholic String Quintet\, written in his ‘tragic’ key of G minor. \nTea and home made cakes served at 4pm. \nTickets £15 (£13 for those on low incomes)\, available on the door. Under 18s free of charge.

SUMMARY:Tea-Time Concert: Vaughan Williams at 150
DESCRIPTION:Ralph Vaughan Williams\nSuite for Viola – Group 1\nThe Lark Ascending\nOn Wenlock Edge \nMarking the 150th birthday of one of England’s best-loved and most distinctive composers\, this programme features the nation’s most treasured work\, The Lark Ascending\, in an arrangement for solo violin\, piano and string quartet. The ravishing and wistful Suite for Viola has three movements – an arpeggiotic Prelude develops into a soaring lyricism\, and a simple Carol is followed by a hearty and celebratory Christmas Dance. The song cycle On Wenlock Edge\, in which Vaughan Williams sets poetry from A.E. Housman’s quintessentially English collection A Shropshire Lad\, completes this celebratory concert. \nTea and home made cakes served at 4pm. \nTickets £15 (£13 for those on low incomes)\, available on the door. SUMMARY:Tea-Time Concert: Piano Trios
DESCRIPTION:Felix Mendelssohn Piano Trio in D minor\nFrank Bridge Miniatures \nIn 1839\, when Mendelssohn produced his Piano Trio in D minor\, Op 49\, Robert Schumann immediately proclaimed it ‘the master trio of the age’. The beloved chamber work has a classical-era structure but is unmistakably Romantic\, with its extended lyrical themes\, often a dialogue between the cello and violin\, whilst the piano part is both characterful and passionately virtuosic. Frank Bridge’s Miniatures were composed in the early 20th century\, delightful cameos full of sparkling detail. \nTea and home made cakes served at 4pm. \nTickets £15 (£13 for those on low incomes)\, available on the door.
