SUMMARY:Henleaze Concert Society: Eastern Echoes
DESCRIPTION:Béla Bartók Romanian Folk Dances\nFrédéric Chopin Piano Concerto No.2 Op.21\nDmitri Shostakovich Gadfly Suite\nFranz Liszt Hungarian Rhapsodies 2 and 9 arr. strings \nViv Mclean piano \nOur season opens with Béla Bartók’s Romanian Folk Dances\, a vibrant suite composed in 1915 amid the turmoil of the First World War. Drawing on fiddle tunes he collected from the Transylvanian countryside\, Bartók captures the raw energy and charm of traditional peasant music—from the flirtatious Sash Dance to the proud swagger of the Stick Dance. \nFolk influences also shine in Franz Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsodies. Written in 1851\, Rhapsody No. 2 – described by Liszt as “truly Hungarian” – is a beloved showpiece\, while No. 9 blends authentic folk melodies with brilliant improvisatory flair\, creating a dazzling display of virtuosity and color. \nDmitri Shostakovich’s Gadfly Suite brings cinematic drama to the concert hall. Composed for the 1955 Soviet film The Gadfly\, it follows the tale of a 19th-century Austrian revolutionary. The suite includes the dashing Galop and the lush\, unforgettable Romance. \nWe close with the lyrical beauty of Frédéric Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2\, composed in 1829 when he was just 20 years old. Premiered in Warsaw to a sold-out audience with Chopin himself at the keyboard\, this concerto showcases the composer’s gift for haunting melodies and brilliant pianism. The central Adagio\, tender and romantic\, was inspired by his youthful infatuation with soprano Konstancja Gładkowska. \nPre-concert talk with Steve Clarke begins at 6.45pm. Doors open at 6.15pm for the talk and at 7.15pm for the concert only. If coming to the concert only\, we should be grateful if you would try to avoid arriving during the talk. \nIndividual concert prices \nTickets for Henleaze Concert Society members £17.50\nTickets for non members £21\nUnder 25 year olds £5 \nThe ticket price includes the pre concert talk\, a programme and interval drink. \nHow to book \nBook tickets online – see below \nYou can also book by sending a cheque payable to Henleaze Concert Society\, covering note and SAE to 2 Saville Mews\, Kingsdown Parade\, Bristol BS6 5UL \nTickets are available on the door from 6.15pm. \nSeason Tickets and Annual Society Membership \nSeason tickets are only £100 including Society Membership and admission to all six concerts from September to July. SUMMARY:Henleaze Concert Society: Beethoven 4
DESCRIPTION:Beethoven Piano Concerto No.4; Symphony No.4 \nViv Mclean piano \nBoth the Piano Concerto No. 4 and the Fourth Symphony were composed in 1806 and received their public premieres in 1808. The Piano Concerto is the most frequently performed of all Beethoven’s concertos\, and the Fourth Symphony\, the least performed of all his symphonies\, despite being considered a masterpiece by many leading musicologists. When Beethoven’s younger contemporary Hector Berlioz heard the symphony he wrote that the slow movement was the work of the Archangel Michael\, and not that of a human. \nPre-concert talk with Steve Clarke begins at 6.45pm. SUMMARY:Henleaze Concert Society: Spring in the Air
DESCRIPTION:Rossini Overture to The Barber of Seville\nPonchielli Dance of the Hours\nDebussy Petite Suite\nMozart Serenade for 13 Wind Instruments K.361 \nThe woodwind have their chance to shine in this programme of colourful music from around Europe with Mozart’s iconic and treasured Serenade for 13 Wind Instruments paired with works arranged for wind quintet. Rossini’s effervescent Overture to the Barber of Seville is the perfect opener\, and the Italian theme is continued with Dance of the Hours\, a ballet from Amilcare Ponchielli’s opera La Gioconda\, made famous by its inclusion in Disney’s 1940 film Fantasia with dancing and duelling hippos and alligators taking centre stage. Debussy’s dance-like Petite Suitebeautifully translates from the original piano duet to scoring for wind quintet. The first two movements are based on poems by the 19th century poet Paul Verlaine\, from his 1869 collection Fêtes galantes. The poems evoke the era of 18th-century aristocrats on country outings\, romantic trysts and languid evenings. \nTickets \nSeason ticket for six series concerts £85 including membership\nAnnual Society Membership £12\nTickets for members £15\nTickets for non members £18\nUnder 25 year olds £5 \nHow to book \nBook tickets online now at Eventbrite \nTickets are available from Henleaze Post Office. \nYou can also book by sending a cheque payable to Henleaze Concert Society\, covering note and SAE to 2 Saville Mews\, Kingsdown Parade\, Bristol BS6 5UL \nSeason Tickets and Annual Society Membership\nSeason tickets are only £85 including Society Membership and admission to all six concerts from October to June. Vaughan Williams’ variations on the folk song Dives and Lazarus are richly scored\, revelling in the uniquely English sound of his music\, similar in expansiveness to Elgar’s rapturous Introduction and Allegro.  Finzi’s Romance is also unmistakably English but with a poignant and elegiac quality\, whilst Holst’s St Paul’s Suite draws on traditional ballads and dance for its inspiration. \nTickets \nSeason ticket for six series concerts £85 including membership\nAnnual Society Membership £12\nTickets for members £15Tickets for non members £18\nUnder 25 year olds £5 \nHow to book \nBook tickets online now at Eventbrite \nTickets are available from Henleaze Post Office.
