New study highlights the live concert experience
At one of our favourite concert halls, St George’s Bristol, a team from the Universities of Bristol and Bath recently asked a simple question: what really changes when you are in the room?
They compared audiences at live classical and jazz performances with people watching a high-quality livestream in another room. Those in the performance space reported feeling more absorbed and connected, and many said they were more likely to seek out the artist again or return to the venue.
The study also tracked heart rates and found stronger synchrony among people sitting together in the hall. It’s not about tech versus live, it’s a reminder that sharing space, attention, and sound creates a social and physical alignment that’s hard to stream.
