Edward Elgar’s The Dream Of Gerontius is an emotionally-powerful setting of Cardinal Newman’s poem about the journey of an ordinary person’s soul through death to judgment before God. First performed in Birmingham Town Hall in 1900, it is now widely considered one of the great choral masterpieces, scored for full orchestra, three soloists, and a large choir.
