Book NowThe Somerset International Festival of the Arts’ lunchtime concert features one of the greatest of all chamber music works – Schubert’s Quintet in C, with international performers in the intimate surroundings of St Andrew’s Church.
Schubert’s final chamber work is widely considered one of the great achievements in Western Culture. The sublime slow movement is a true masterpiece, and is often described as the epitome of coming to terms with the end of life. It holds a unique place in the history of music, with the famous novelist Thomas Mann asked for it to be played on his deathbed, as did pianist Arthur Rubinstein, and the composer Benjamin Britten considered “Schubert’s final year as the most miraculous year in the history of music.”
