Ralph Vaughan Williams
Suite for Viola – Group 1
The Lark Ascending
On Wenlock Edge
Marking the 150th birthday of one of England’s best-loved and most distinctive composers, this programme features one of the nation’s most treasured works, The Lark Ascending, in an arrangement for solo violin, piano and string quartet. The ravishing and wistful Suite for Viola has three movements – an arpeggiotic Prelude develops into a soaring lyricism, and a simple Carol is followed by a hearty and celebratory Christmas Dance. The song cycle On Wenlock Edge, in which Vaughan Williams sets poetry from A.E. Housman’s quintessentially English collection A Shropshire Lad, completes this celebratory concert.
